What’s happening

FMCSA has announced plans to stop issuing new MC numbers and transition to using DOT numbers as the primary identifier for brokers and carriers. The official start date is currently set for October 1, 2025, but FMCSA may adjust the timeline.

Good news

Our systems already support this change—you don’t need to take any immediate action. Operations will continue seamlessly.

What you should do

  • Verify carrier DOT number is accurate in FMCSA’s system.

  • Begin using DOT numbers as your main reference when updating paperwork or contracts.

  • Let your carriers know you’ll accept either MC or DOT during the transition.

Timeline

  • Now: Continue using both MC and DOT numbers. Begin prioritizing DOT lookups in vetting and paperwork updates.

  • October 1, 2025 (planned): FMCSA will stop issuing new MC numbers. New applicants will receive only a DOT number.

  • Next: Gradual phase-out of existing MC numbers. FMCSA has stated this will be a “measured approach” to allow time for industry adjustment.

  • Later: Full transition to USDOT numbers as the sole identifier. MC numbers will no longer be required.

⚠️ Important: These dates are FMCSA’s current plan, but they may adjust the timeline. The phase-out could be delayed or extended based on industry feedback.
