What To Do If You Suspect a Load Has Been Stolen

A stolen load is a serious event that requires immediate action. If you believe a load has been stolen, following the steps below will help ensure the fastest possible and most effective investigation.

Written by Jessica Hale

Step 1: Report the Carrier Through Highway

As soon as you suspect a theft event, submit a report using the Report Fraud button on the carrier's Highway profile.

This step is required to initiate a formal investigation and create an Identity Alert for other users on the platform.

Step 2: File a Police Report

If a police report has not already been filed, we strongly recommend doing so immediately.

If available, include the police report number as part of your submission. This information can assist with the investigation and any recovery efforts.

Step 3: Gather Key Load Information

Providing detailed information helps accelerate the investigation. Please collect as much of the following information as possible.

Load Details

  • Tendered carrier authority

  • Email addresses that received the rate confirmation

  • Pickup date and time (including time zone)

  • Pickup address

  • Load number (if applicable)

Driver & Equipment Information

  • Driver name

  • Driver phone number

  • Truck license plate number

  • Trailer license plate number

  • Photos of the truck and trailer (if available)

Carrier Contact Information

  • Names, phone numbers, and email addresses for anyone you communicated with at the carrier

If Double Brokering Is Suspected

If you have identified an underlying carrier, please provide:

  • The rate confirmation received from the rebrokering authority

  • The location where the load was redirected

  • The rebrokering authority information

  • A copy of the Bill of Lading (BOL), if available

What Happens Next?

Once your report is submitted, Highway's Risk team will review available information and investigate potential indicators of fraud.

The investigation may include analysis of:

  • Carrier identity and user activity

  • Onboarding and connection data

  • Load-related information

  • Secure Rate Confirmation Delivery records

  • Other relevant platform activity

The timing of investigations may vary depending on the circumstances and severity of the event, 2 weeks is a typical timeframe.

Investigation Results

Following the investigation, Highway may provide:

  • A summary of findings

  • Relevant observations related to the event

  • Recommended next steps

  • Suggested fraud-prevention measures

  • Recommendations for additional Highway rules or products that may help reduce future risk

Best Practices for Preventing Future Theft Events

To strengthen your fraud prevention process, consider:
