Help Carriers Connect and Manage Their ELD

Use this guide to understand why Highway requires ELD connections, what ELD data is used for, and how to help a carrier connect or troubleshoot their ELD.

Written by Destini Okoro

Why Highway requires an ELD connection

Highway uses ELD connectivity to help verify that the carrier is legitimate and that its trucks are active and moving.

An ELD connection can help Highway:

  • Confirm active power units associated with a carrier

  • Verify recent vehicle movement

  • Support carrier identity and equipment verification

  • Provide brokers with better visibility into loads

  • Help carriers qualify for additional broker opportunities and loads

Brokers may prefer carriers with an active ELD connection because it provides greater confidence that the carrier has operating equipment and can be tracked during a load.

For more information, see Your ELD Connection to Highway.

How carriers connect their ELD

Carriers must connect their ELD directly through Highway for Carriers. Brokers should not request or collect a carrier’s ELD credentials.

Ask the carrier to:

  1. Open the Equipment tab.

  2. Select Connect ELD or New ELD Connection.

  3. Select their ELD provider.

  4. Follow the provider’s sign-in or authorization instructions.

The carrier may be asked to sign in through their ELD provider or provide an API key, depending on the provider.

ELD connection versus ELD visibility

A carrier may successfully connect an ELD provider and still have vehicles missing from Highway.

Term

Meaning

ELD Connection

Your ELD provider account is successfully linked to Highway

ELD Visibility

Individual vehicles from your ELD appear in Highway

Note: Connection is the first step. Vehicle visibility still requires correct VIN information, the vehicle being active in the ELD provider's system, necessary permissions, active ELD accounts, and recent activity or location data from the device.

ELD resolution and establishing connection

If the provider is connected but a vehicle is missing, direct the carrier to Troubleshoot ELD Connection and Equipment Issues.

How carriers disconnect an ELD

Carriers can disconnect their ELD API connection through their ELD provider account or by emailing eldservice@highway.com.

Highway will disconnect the connection upon request.

If the carrier’s ELD provider is not supported

If the carrier does not see their provider listed, ask them to have the provider contact eldintegrations@highway.com so Highway can review secure API support.
