Know Your Driver

Know Your Driver (KYD) helps verify the identity of the driver assigned to a load before pickup, reducing fraud risk and increasing shipment security.

Written by Jason Veitch

What is KYD?

KYD is a feature of Load Lock that requires an assigned driver to complete identity verification before being able to pick up a load.

When enabled, it ensures:

  • A real, verified driver is tied to the load

  • Brokers are alerted to any verification risks or issues

  • Carriers complete required steps before pickup

When Does KYD Apply?

Brokers can choose when KYD is required based on their preferences. This may include:

  • All loads

  • Specific shippers

  • Specific facilities

  • High-value shipments

  • High-Risk Areas

  • Certain facility commodity types

  • Specific teams within your brokerage

What Carriers See

When a load requires KYD:

  • The load appears under My Loads → Action Needed

  • The carrier is prompted to assign a vehicle and driver

Assigning a Driver

Brokers can assign a driver via TMS or in the Highway Broker Portal under Load Details.

Please note: In order to assign a driver in your TMS, your TMS must be sending us driver information via API.

  • Provide driver phone number via your TMS integration with Highway

  • Select a carrier’s existing driver or input name and phone number in the Load Details page of the Highway Broker Portal

Carriers can assign a driver as part of their workflow.

  • Select an existing driver

  • Add a new driver (name + phone number)

If a new driver is added:

  • They are assigned to the load

  • No login or invitation is required

Identity Verification Process

After a driver is assigned:

  • 6 hours before the start of the pick up window, the driver is texted a request to complete identity verification

  • Verification is completed in Highway

What Happens After Verification

Approved Verification

If verification is successful:

  • The driver is marked as Verified in Load Details

  • No action is needed

Failed Verification

Brokers are notified immediately via Know Your Driver Failed Load Lock Alert when:

  • A driver fails verification

    • These failures can range from an expired license to live image not matching the ID used

  • Verification is not completed by 2 hours before the start of the pick up window

Issues with Verification

Brokers are notified immediately via Know Your Driver Issue Load Lock Alert when:

  • The driver passes the identity portion of the check, but there are issues with the driver’s credentials

    • Issues include non-domiciled, limited term, or non-CDL licenses

These Load Lock Alerts are:

  • Visible under Alerts in the Broker Portal

  • Sent via email just like other Load Lock alerts

Important Reminders

  • A driver must be assigned before we can request identity verification

  • This applies even for ELD-connected carriers

Why KYD Matters?

KYD helps you:

  • Reduce fraud risk

  • Ensure driver accountability

  • Improve shipment security

  • Gain better visibility into who is moving your freight

Why Now?

The legal and regulatory environment around driver qualification is changing, and brokers need better visibility before a shipment moves.

As of March 18, 2026, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved H.R. 5688, officially titled Dalilah’s Law, and advanced it toward the House floor. The bill would tighten CDL-related standards by emphasizing English-language proficiency, stronger enforcement, stricter eligibility and verification rules for certain non-domiciled licenses, and additional oversight tied to safety and fraud prevention.

In the same month, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on March 4, 2026, in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, LLC. The case asks whether brokers can be sued for negligently selecting a motor carrier or driver. The Court is expected to issue a decision in June 2026. Depending on the outcome, brokers may face even more scrutiny around how they evaluate the carriers and drivers connected to a shipment.

KYD gives brokers a practical, auditable way to verify assigned drivers before pickup and identify credentials that do not meet load or broker requirements. As legal requirements and market expectations evolve, KYD will expand with them.
